Our Work
It
has always been the philosophy of Joe Hand Promotions to support
many causes and organizations, such as the Special Olympics,
Children's Miracle Network Telethon and scholarship funds at local
Philadelphia-area high schools, in order to make a difference in the
community. Joe Hand, Sr. received the prestigious Wanamaker
Community Service Award in 2002 because of his philanthropy.
To further Joe Hand, Sr.’s benevolence to the community, he
established the Joe Hand Boxing Gym in 1995. What started as a dream
to give back to the city of Philadelphia, quickly became a reality
and currently benefits inner city youth with multi-faceted programs
that are designed to encourage children to achieve self-imposed
goals. Recently, Hand installed a state-of-the-art computer lab and
hired instructors so that children were able to study and do their
homework while at the gym. The non-profit organization has reached
over 600 area youth and prides itself on helping children continue
their education. The boxing gym is the first building of it’s kind
in the United States that not only trains children’s bodies, but
their minds as well. When speaking about the facility, Mr. Hand
summed it up best, “When an individual arrives at the gym with a gym
bag on one shoulder and a schoolbag on the other, we know we are
doing something right!”
The Joe Hand Boxing Gym has also been hosting the Eastern
Pennsylvania Golden Gloves Tournament for the past eleven years,
bringing the prestigious event back to its original luster. The
tournament has grown in record numbers since 1996 and has seen
increases in registration, attendance and championship boxers. In
2000, the Joe Hand Boxing Gym and the city of Philadelphia hosted
the Pennsylvania State Finals for the first time in 40 years. The
Philadelphia contingent of the tournament went on to win the 2000
and 2001 National Golden Gloves Titles. One of the Joe Hand Boxing
Gyms members, Randy Griffin, participated in the Olympic Trials and
won a Silver Medal. Chazz Witherspoon, another gym member, was part
of the 2004 US Olympic Boxing Team in Athens, Greece. Many members
of the Joe Hand Boxing Gym have had success and are enjoying strong
professional careers. |
