The Joe Hand Boxing Gym and Computer Lab is a unique place that not only trains children’s bodies, but their minds as well. The gym offers a free boxing program for children ages 8 to 17, plus a weekly kickboxing class for young girls, called “Float Like a Butterfly,” that not only teaches various exercises but also builds their self-confidence. The gym also hosts free Community Fitness Days that attract many residents, young and old, who learn the importance of an active lifestyle.
“Seeing kids come to the boxing gym with their gym bags on one shoulder and their schoolbag on the other is such a rewarding feeling,” Joe Hand, Sr. said.
The gym also offers training and instruction to adults interested in using boxing as a new tool for fitness.
It has always been the philosophy of Joe Hand Promotions to support many causes and organizations, such as the Special Olympics, Children's Miracle Network Telethon and scholarship funds at local Philadelphia-area high schools, in order to make a difference in the community. Joe Hand, Sr. received the prestigious Wanamaker Community Service Award in 2002 because of his philanthropy.
“Joe Hand Boxing Gym has been an exemplary citizen of Northern Liberties and a great partner with the NLNA. The Gym has run numerous free fitness programs and tech workshops that have benefitted children and families throughout our community and other nearby neighborhoods. It's a valuable neighborhood resource and we hope it can sustain and grow this great programming into the future."

"When I was younger, I was a bully. Ever since I started coming here, my family saw a change in me. I made a lot of friends here, but they're not just my friends. They're like my second family. I can tell (my instructors) things I can't even tell my parents. They're like my second parents."
